What a Doll!

Almost since the moment she was born, I have thought to myself that Lizzie's face looked so different from the other two girls, and yet so familiar to me at the same time. I thought (or maybe just hoped) that it was because she looked more like me than the other two girls.

But I think I have finally figured out why she looks so familiar to me. When I was a baby, I creatively named my first doll Beebee, and I took her with me everywhere. I recently found this doll and brought her out for Lizzie to see. It was then that I noticed....

Is it just my imagination, or does Lizzie look a lot like Beebee? Same hair, same rosy cheeks, eyebrows, eyes, little lips....

Random strangers have told me that Lizzie was "just like a doll!"

What do you think?

Emma's First Day of Homeschool!

Emma's homeschool adventure began on Monday, August 24!

Based on her level of interest and the fact that she is suddenly a voracious reader, Doug and I decided to go ahead and start kindergarten with her this year, even though she won't be five until September 18. I gathered curriculum in all the basics (reading, writing, math, science, Bible, and, of course, who can forget all those nifty art projects involving scissors, glue and common household objects).

Here are Emma's first day of school photos in her "first day of school outfit" (can't tell she's excited, can you?):

As I look at these pictures, I just can't seem to get over how grown up she suddenly looks!

Okay, I know we didn't technically GO anywhere, but who can resist the first day of school picture by the front door? After I took this picture, Emma told me that the smile didn't count because she was laughing.

So I took this picture. Which really wasn't a smile at all....

Once we started class, Emma was all seriousness and proved to be a good student, as you can see by how she is concentrating on her coloring...

You're probably wondering how this homeschool thing works out with the two younger ones needing my attention too. That's a very good question, and I don't have that one completely figured out yet. But so far it's been going well.

Abby understands that when Mommy is Emma's teacher, she can either listen quietly or go find an activity to entertain herself. She has usually opted to stay and listen or help entertain Lizzie while I go over Emma's lesson with her. I also plan some of the activities with Abby in mind (like art and science projects which are easy to include her on). While Emma is working on her coloring, Abby likes to find her own favorite coloring book and color beside Emma at the kitchen table. Today, Abby looked up at me after filling-in most of the page with color and said, "Mom, I LOVE coloring!"

She had the cutest expression on her face!

What about Lizzie? Since she's become a part of my hip lately, I was concerned that there might be an issue. But so far, she has been content to be close in the same room where we are working and seems to enjoy all the activity going on around her. Of course, her two naps also help since we can get a lot done while she sleeps.

Our first week of school will wind down with our first official field trip to the zoo tomorrow, to observe the animals. And Friday is "library day" when Emma gets to use her very own library card for the first time....One week down, only 39 to go before the end of the school year!

Daddy is a "Preacher-Man" & Now a "Master!" (of Hebrew Bible)

Daddy Doug, as the girls sometimes call him, recently accepted a job as Director of Christian Education at our church. One of his first official duties was to fill in as pulpit supply while our pastor went on vacation for two weeks.

Sunday morning went very well as you can see. He will preach again this Sunday. (If you want to hear his sermons on discipleship, we can get you a copy.)

Earlier in the week, Doug spent some time at church studying and preparing his sermon. I took this picture from across the room so it's a little fuzzy. (It was actually in the background of the picture below it.)

Emma has suddenly figured out how to read (yes actually read) all sorts of books. I've been teaching her phonics off and on over the past couple of years, but her brain seems to have suddenly put it all together well beyond anything I've taught her to this point. She is reading all of the Dr. Seuss books we have in our house, and whatever else she can get her hands on. For those of you who remember my childhood reading days, this pose should look familiar....

Emma has enjoyed showing off her reading talents by reading all sorts of books to Abby. Abby, of course, is thrilled to have Emma's attention. However, Emma sometimes prefers to read alone. I believe that is what happened in this picture. You can really see Abby's personality shining through!

After we got home from church on Sunday, everyone was exhausted. Even Doug and Emma, who never take naps, got some much-needed rest. (Aren't they mirror-images of each other?)

As if Doug's week wasn't already busy enough, he was also preparing to take the Hebrew portion of his M.A. exam and make that degree official. Good news is he passed! Although it may not appear on his transcript until the end of fall semester, Doug can now say he has earned his M.A. And believe me, he has definitely EARNED it! I am very proud of all the hard work he has done. Congratulations, Babe!

Now he only has to finish up classes this year, study for and take Prelims next summer, and then work on his dissertation to earn his Ph.D. Maybe he'll be done by 2012?

Friday was Cicada Day

Friday morning was a beautiful day for the girls to go swinging in the back yard. At least that's what I thought when I sent them outside so I could take my shower.

A few moments later, however, Emma and Abby came running back inside screaming about the scary looking bug with the funny white bottom that was on the swingset.

Now you must understand that only the day before, I was trying to emphasize the importance of obeying Mommy immediately and had given them different scenarios where obeying right away would be potentially life-saving. One of these stories involved a poisonous spider sitting on their shoulder without their knowing, and Mommy saying "Don't move!"

So when I heard the girls coming in with their wild story about the bug, my first impulse was to simply excuse it and chalk it up to over-imagination. But the girls kept insisting, so I thought I should investigate. Here is Emma pointing to one of the bugs.

Can you tell what it is? If not, here's a closer look at what I first saw when I walked outside (still in my jammies with no shower, I might add. I must be braver than I thought).

It took me a few seconds to realize that the girls had found not one, but two molting cicadas on their swingset. The first one was already out of his skin and drying in the sun. Although, by the description the girls gave me I think they actually saw it emerging. The girls didn't seem entirely convinced that it was safe, but once I explained what it was, they relaxed a bit. (Although they still thought it was an ugly bug.)

The second cicada was just starting to emerge when I grabbed the camera. I was able to capture the moment with several pictures. Here are the two I liked best.

I had never seen a cicada being "born" before, so it was pretty exciting. We had our own little science/nature lesson going on! Once the first cicada's wings were sufficiently dry, it crawled into the shade on the underneath side of the slide and stayed there until late afternoon. This picture gives a good glance at the wings and body.

We were all fascinated. That is to say, all of us except Lizzie. She was much more interested in tearing a paper towel into little bits using her two bottom teeth. Yes, I said two! Her second tooth arrived early in the week but isn't big enough to see in a picture yet. She was quite determined as you can plainly see.

Why did she have a paper towel, you say? For wiping up spit up, of course! (Although in this case it was just a teething towel.) Don't worry. She didn't swallow it. At least not that I noticed.....

Summer Fun!

We started off the month of August with a heat wave. The girls enjoyed cooling off in their "pool" in the back yard. They would put on their swimsuits in the morning and leave them on all day. They only came inside for meals and if the mosquitoes were biting. My job was to make sure they didn't get a sunburn or heat stroke by calling them in regularly for potty breaks and drinks of water.

A funny story about potty breaks...one night right after Doug got home from work, I looked out our deck window to tell the girls that he was home and they should come inside for a few minutes. I see Abby standing buck naked in the middle of the yard with her swimsuit down to her ankles. I yelled out to see what was going on, and Emma peeks out from behind our blue spruce, also half naked (you guess which half). They informed me that they needed to go potty and didn't want to come inside. Since I am trying to raise girls that are modest, you can imagine how horrified I was...especially when I realized that the neighbors behind us were having a barbecue and had a full view of the whole debacle!! That was one of those moments where I had to laugh...but not let them see it as we explained why going potty in the back yard was not a good idea...Anywayz...

Lizzie has her own special baby pool (which I had to inflate with my mouth as we don't have an air pump). Emma was kind enough to help Lizzie sit up and play with some bath toys.

Lizzie thought that the warm water was great. This was her first real experience sitting up in water since she still lays down (for safety reasons) when she takes baths in the house.

Emma was very attentive to Lizzie. She picked up her toys and held her very carefully. It's such a great feeling to see how well the sisters get along. Lizzie adores Emma and Emma loves to make Lizzie smile and help me take care of her.

As soon as Lizzie was done, Emma jumped back in the water with Abby. I asked them to pose for the camera and got these three :

1.

2.

3.

When they needed to dry off or were tired of being in the water, the girls enjoyed the swingset. The girls figured out how to do what Emma calls a "chair swing" on their own...since Abby doesn't know how to pump yet.

The summer has gone by all too fast. In just a couple of weeks, Doug will be off on a trip to Italy for 16 days and school will start again. And I am planning to begin homeschooling Emma with some kindergarten on August 24. Where does the time go?

Abby the Cat Girl

It would appear that there is another cat lady in the family. Abby loves, loves, loves to spend time with the kitties. She follows/chases them all over the house just to catch a snuggle. Here she sneaked in a quick squeeze with Bailey while he was resting. By the look on his face he may not appear to be enjoying it as much as Abby, but just so you know, he was purring and appreciative. Abby loves to pet and brush the kitties for me, which I must say, sure makes my life a little easier!

Someone Has Grown Her First Tooth!

I can't believe July is already gone. Where does the time go, anyway? Since my last post, Lizzie has grown her first tooth. It turned out to not be a molar, but her front bottom right tooth. Gotta tell you I was kinda relieved. I don't really need to feel molars chomping on me while nursing... yet.

She was quite grumpy (for Lizzie, which still is good by the standard of most babies) for a few days, wanting Mommy to hold her all the time. And she drooled and spit up everywhere. She was going through several changes of clothes per day, and bibs, and got a bath every night because she smelled so sour...until the morning of Saturday, July 26, when I noticed her little tooth had poked through. Here is a picture of her waking up from her nap a few days after her tooth came. She was using Pretty Baby as a pillow. Isn't that sweet?

Lizzie loves to feel the tooth with her pointy dragon tongue. It took me a while to get the above picture of her tooth because her tongue kept getting in the way. Persistence pays off, though!

It seems I have my happy baby back...at least for a few more days before she starts working on the next tooth:) Here's a look at the little face I see every morning after feeding her "breakfast!"
